On Friday, Pinpoint Policy Institute submitted a comment letter to the Federal Reserve in response to a study examining the impact of new capital standards on U.S. insurers. Pinpoint was joined by Americans for Tax Reform and the American Consumers Institute for Citizen Research in the letter, which critiques the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) for overstepping its authority by reviewing potential capital standards that would apply to U.S.-based insurers. The letter notes the outsized influence of largely unaccountable NGOs, such as the NAIC, in the development of what should be state-based insurance regulation. Further, the letter calls for greater accountability and transparency in the process for adopting capital standards for U.S. insurers.
